Helsinki Day at Sitratori

Event Introduction

Let’s gather together on Sitratori square to celebrate our city! Race Horse Company circus artists can swing from the Wheel of Death, but the rest of us get to confidently enjoy the celebrations, cotton candy, piano music and handicrafts without a care in the world. This event also celebrates the new look for Sitratori – the murals, inspired by ideas from locals and painted by Helsinki Urban Art.

Event host: Juha Pekka Tapani Heikkinen

PROGRAMME

3 pm Mural unveiling and opening ceremony
The event will be opened by Deputy Mayor Paavo Arhinmäki. Introductions from artist Anetta Lukjanova and Helsinki Urban Art.

3–5 pm Music by the Cycling Pianist
Pianist Aarno Paakkari’s repertoire includes jazz, stride piano and rhythm & blues. As he plays, he also cycles and steers his mobile instrument, the Bicycle Piano.

3–6 pm Confidence workshop
What skills can you find in Kannelmäki? Maybe you’ve heard that you’ve got good nature skills, or noticed how easy it is for you to get to know new people? At D-asema Kannelmäki’s Confidence Workshop, you can identify and build confidence on your skills and strengths through guided exercise.

3–6 pm Tote Bag Workshop
Want to be known for where you’re from? Join us and stencil a part of the new mural on a tote bag at this Helsinki Urban Art workshop.

Indoors at Kanneltalo

4:30–7:30 pm Workshop on impressions of the Liekeissä exhibition
The Kanneltalo gallery is currently featuring the Young Visual Art 2024 exhibition, Liekeissä, which you’ll get to study in this Helsinki Day workshop. This exhibition consists of paintings, videos, photographs and sculptures by 15–25-year-old artists. The exhibition is presented by Helsinki Youth Services.

5 pm & 7 pm Race Horse Company: Spinsane – Wheel of Death
Spinsane is a circus artist’s hamster wheel that spins around insanity and uncommon sense. Their original humour and impressive acrobatics make Spinsane a joy for people of all ages.

As the wheel spins, everyone can forget their daily worries and focus on the circus artist’s act – or try it themselves, if they dare.
