Helsinki Day was celebrated once again with hundreds of free events
Helsinki’s 476th anniversary was celebrated in high spirits once again on Friday 12 June, as hundreds of free events invited everyone to enjoy the city through music, dance, sports events, and nature experiences. The highlights of the day also included various Helsinki Day awards and recognitions.
Helsinki Day offered free experiences for all ages across the city. People enjoyed top gigs, open-air pavilion dances, circus arts, park and street parties, sports challenges, flea market days, as well as open doors to locations like outdoor swimming pools, the Hanasaari power plant, the Olympic Stadium field, Linnanmäki amusement park, and several museums. With nearly 300 wide-ranging events, the day’s program truly had something for everyone.
As per tradition, Helsinki Day kicked off with morning coffee at City Hall, where Mayor Daniel Sazonov served coffee and rhubarb pie to a thousand Helsinki residents. After the morning coffee, the Mayor congratulated the first baby born on Helsinki Day at the Women’s Hospital. The day’s traditions also include naming the Stadin Friidu and Stadin Kundi, and this time the titles granted by the Stadin Slangi association went to Heini Lehtonen and Antti Reini. During the day, several distinguished citizens were also honored with Helsinki Day medals and accolades.
