Event Introduction

Whose history are we actually talking about when we talk about the history of Wivi Lönn? How are gender and sexuality connected with the history of architecture and urban planning? How have different spaces affected the visibility of marginalised identities?

The theme tour Queer look on the history of architecture and space leads the listener to take a critical look at the Long live Wivi Lönn! exhibition in the Museum of Finnish Architecture as well as the history of architecture and the Helsinki cityscape. During the tour, a guide familiar with the themes will take the audience through the relationships between power and cityscape, the themes of visibility and invisibility as well as where people belonging to minority subcultures met each other in 20th century Helsinki.

The theme tour begins: Museum of Finnish Architecture (Kasarmikatu 24, 00130 Helsinki) The theme tour ends: Lasipalatsi (Mannerheimintie 22–24, 00100 Helsinki) The tour is realised in co-operation by the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Friends of Queer History. The tour has been written by historian Jean Lukkarinen. The tour guide is art and community educator, artist and philosopher Kaura Raudaskoski. The guided tour is part of the programme of the Long Live Wivi Lönn! exhibition.

The theme tour begins in the Museum of Finnish Architecture and continues outside in the public city space. The tour takes about 90 minutes. The route is about 1.7 kilometres in length. The tour tries to avoid steps and other obstacles in the city space. However, the route does contain some cobblestone passages, unsloped sidewalk edges as well as uneven terrain with elevation. The tour’s pace is leisurely and includes several stops. There are no easily accessible seats or benches along the route. You may bring your own folding chair. The closest accessible and gender-neutral public WC is located in the Museum of Finnish Architecture. The guide uses a portable microphone.

The Museum of Finnish Architecture is not fully accessible. More information about accessibility at the Museum of Finnish Architecture
We recommend the use of a face mask (concerns all participants over the age of 12).
