Helsinki Day at the core
Event Introduction
Come and celebrate Helsinki Day at the core of the city! A festive atmosphere descends once again on the Lasipalatsi Square on 12 June when Helsinki celebrates its birthday with dance, music and community spirit from morning till night. The event is free of charge, and everyone is welcome. This year’s highlights are music performances by Pihlaja and Ege Zulu.
The Lasipalatsi Square is poised to host another unforgettable Helsinki Day programme of dance and music by top artists! The festivities get off to an energetic start with a lunchtime disco hosted by DJ Windows95man, followed by DJ crews Willamomafia and Lonely Hearts Club, who will keep the city dancing through the afternoon.
An interactive art installation called Dansbana!, which is part of Amos Rex’s summer programme, opens on Helsinki Day and completes the set. The installation by Anna Fridolin, Anna Pang and Teres Selberg invites the public to connect their personal devices to a shared sound system via Bluetooth. The launch also includes a street dance performance Brick Jamz led by Axelle Munezero.
The event is being broadcast live on Radio Helsinki, with DJ Lida Moeini and artist Lassi Valtonen mingling with the crowds throughout the afternoon to collect the best stories and songs about Helsinki!
The programme in the Lasipalatsi Square culminates in stage performances by Pihlaja and Ege Zulu in the evening. Pihlaja gets her influence from R&B and pop, and her music combines beautiful melodies with dark sounds. Ege Zulu’s music is a mixture of genres from hip-hop to Afropop and radiates positive energy with thought-provoking lyrics. The event is hosted by Tom Nylund and includes a Helsinki Day address by Mayor Daniel Sazonov.
In addition to the Dansbana! installation, Amos Rex is treating the public to free admission to its exhibitions on Helsinki Day. The adjacent Narinkka Square sets the scene for a family-friendly Exercise Is Medicine event.
