475-year-old Helsinki was celebrated with hundreds of events
Helsinki Day was celebrated on Thursday, 12 June with almost 250 free events across the city. Although the weather was as variable as a northern summer can be, a joyful atmosphere filled the 475-year-old city. To honour the remarkable age, the iconic ‘Stone Men’, or The Lantern Bearers of the Helsinki Railway Station, also wore shirts announcing Helsinki’s birthday from 6 to 12 June.
As is the tradition, Helsinki Day kicked off at the City Hall, where Mayor Daniel Sazonov served coffee and rhubarb pie to a thousand Helsinki residents. The mayor then congratulated the first baby born on Helsinki Day at the Women’s Hospital.
For the first time, Lasipalatsi and Narinkkatori Squares became the venue for the great Helsinki Day at the Core event, the programme of which included a performance by Karri Koira, communal art, sports activities and Helsinki-themed films. Audiences could join in the event’s great atmosphere through the IG Live broadcast twice during the day.
This year’s Stadin friidu and kundi were announced on the Espa Stage. The titles awarded by the Stadin Slangi ry went to Elisa ”Elli” Tiilikainen and Mikko-Olavi Seppälä, and the programme on the stage continued until the evening with music curated by the Savoy Theatre.
The city’s cultural centres offered diverse programmes for people of all ages throughout the day. There were workshops, magic shows, games, treats, sports, dance, circus acts and plenty of live music.
Several distinguished Helsinki residents were also rewarded with Helsinki Day medals and honours.
